Thermic Bottles (presentation one)
What are Thermic Bottles?
The children learn how to match ‘Thermic Bottles’. In a Montessori classroom, there are four sets of pairs of thermic bottles. Thermic bottles are little glass bottles filled up with water of different temperatures, for example, two bottles are quite hot, two bottles are warm, two bottles are tepid and two bottles are cold.
How is the first presentation done with the Thermic Bottles?
The child is asked to sensitive his fingers, as we are working again with our hands, touching different materials. The directress shows the child how to carry the box carefully with two hands. She begins to unpack the first set of bottles and places them on the mat. She introduces hot and cold to the child and asks him if he knows the difference between the two.
Once all of the bottles are placed on the mat, she tells the child: “we will be matching these bottles to their corresponding partner in the box”. She picks up one of the bottles, feels it with one hand, while in the other hand she is finding the matching partner in the box. The directress continues in this manner until all of the bottles are matched.
What does the child learn by doing the first presentation with the Thermic Bottles?
The child learns new matching skills, he is introduced to different temperatures, becoming more aware of his lightness of touch, as well as he is becoming more familiar with temperatures in his environment.
