Triangular Box
What is the Triangular Box?
The Triangular Box is a fascinating wooden box in the shape of a triangle in the Sensorial area of a Montessori classroom. This box contains one large equilateral grey triangle, two right-angled green triangles, three yellow obtuse triangles, and four red equilateral triangles
How the Triangular Box is presented?
The directress shows the child how to carry the box carefully with two hands to the floor mat. She unpacks each triangle one by one and places them on the mat. She begins the presentation by tracing the black lines of the same coloured triangles in the correct manner with her right hand using her index and middle fingers.
The directress first matches the two green triangles, she then matches the red triangles in the same manner by tracing the black lines with her right hand using her index and middle fingers and finally, she matches the yellow triangles.
The directress makes sure she has done the activity correctly by placing the large grey triangle on top of each set of triangles. This is also the control of error as if the grey triangle does not fit properly, then something has gone wrong.
What does the child learn by working with the Triangular Box?
This activity encourages the child to become more patient, it promotes his level of concentration and this activity also prepares the child for geometry that will be done later on in mathematics.
