Algebra

Algebra is a very important part of mathematics, where numbers and quantities are represented by letters and various symbols. In Montessori, we use beautifully designed materials to introduce the children to algebra. What they learn in this section, will help them along the way in their schooling career.

The following algebra materials in Montessori are:

Binomial cube (presentation one)

The directress teaches the child to build the Binomial Cube onto the lid and back into the box, in the form of a rectangular prism. There are two layers of cubes, hence the prefix ‘bi’. There are eight cubes which are blue, red, and black in colour.

In the second presentation with the Montessori Binomial Cube, the directress shows the child how to build the cubes one by one in the correct manner onto the control chart. She first builds the Binomial cube onto the lid like before, and then she builds it on to the control chart. There are two control charts for this activity.

Trinomial cube

This activity is very similar to the first activity with the Binomial Cube. The Trinomial Cube has three layers, hence the prefix ‘tri’. The child is encouraged to build the cubes, one by one in the correct manner onto the lid, and then back into the box.

For the second activity with the Trinomial Cube, the directress begins by showing the child how to build the cubes onto the lid. She then shows him how to build them on to the control chart. There are three control charts for this activity.
