There are many ways the Montessori Large Number Rods are used in the classroom. Two ways are ‘composition’ - adding and ‘decomposition’ - subtracting of numbers. The various activities include:
Large Number Rods: Composition (presentation one)
In Montessori Math, we use the term ‘composition’ which simply means addition. The main aim of this activity is to introduce the concept of addition with the large number rods to the child, as well as to introduce him to the formation of the sum.
Large Number Rods: Composition (presentation two)
In the second presentation using the Montessori Large Number Rods, the directress uses the wooden number boards, as well as the rods. Once the child has fully grasped the concept of adding two numbers together by combining the number rods with the number boards, the directress moves onto the written form.
Large Number Rods: Decomposition
In Montessori Math, we use the term ‘decomposition’, which means to subtract. In this activity, the directress teaches the child how to subtract with the Large Number Rods, as well as to introduce him to the written form.
