Group operations
Group Operations: Static addition (without change)
The word ‘static’ in Montessori Math means there will be no change when either doing addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. The directress uses the large number cards, two sets of small number cards, a bank of golden beads, and a felt-lined tray. The main aim of this activity is to teach the child how to add two or more numbers using the golden beads.
Group Operations: Dynamic addition (with change)
In Montessori Math, the word ‘dynamic’ means an exchange will take place when either doing addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. In this activity, the directress will teach the child how to add two or more numbers using the golden beads, which involve exchange.
Group operations: Static multiplication (without change)
In this activity, the directress teaches the child how to find the product of a number, using the golden beads material. There will be no exchange in this exercise. This Montessori Math activity gives the child a ‘concrete’ experience of multiplication, as well it makes the child aware of multiplication as repeated addition.
Group operations: Dynamic multiplication ( with change)
This Montessori Math activity is very similar to the one mentioned above, the difference here is an exchange will need to take place, hence the word ‘dynamic’.
Group operations: Static subtraction (without change)
The directress uses the golden beads material to teach the child how to find the difference between two numbers, where an exchange will not need to take place. This is a wonderful activity in order to prepare the child for subtraction facts, as well as the development of his mathematical mind.
Group operations: Dynamic subtraction (with change)
This activity is very similar to the one mentioned above, the difference here is the child will learn how to exchange when doing subtraction with the Montessori golden beads.
Group operations: Static division (without change)
The directress teaches the child to find the quotient of a number divided into a number of sets, using the Montessori golden beads material. For this activity, there will be no exchange taking place, hence the word ‘static’.
Group operations: Dynamic division (with change)
In this activity, the child learns how to exchange when finding the quotient of a number divided into a number of sets using the golden beads.
