Field trip

In Montessori, we always begin teaching the child with ‘concrete’ things, then gradually moving on to the ‘abstract’. The child should therefore be introduced to the real animal first. The directress takes a group of children on a field trip, but there are many things to consider when doing this, mainly safety.

Model animals

This is a wonderful activity that introduces the child to many different animals. This is a good opportunity to teach the child the names of the various animals and to test the child’s knowledge in this area.

Large pictures of animals in their natural habitat

In this activity, the directress introduces the child to a variety of animals in their natural habitat. It gives the child a better understanding of what climate each animal needs to survive in.

Phylum (presentation one: overview)

This activity shows the child a different category of phyla. This activity increases the child’s vocabulary, as well as promotes concentration.

Phylum (presentation two: focussing on the phylum class)

This activity gets a little more challenging for the child, as the directress focuses on one phylum more closely. This exercise increases the child’s knowledge of cells and animals, as well as develops an interest in ecology.
