Grace and courtesy in Montessori is the way children should behave in an appropriate manner to have respect for themselves and others around them, this will help children later on in life to lead a happy life in society.
There are different areas of grace and courtesy in Montessori, they are:
How to invite someone into a class
The directress will show the children how she invites someone into the class by giving them a firm handshake and asking how they are.
How to walk around someone who is working on the mat
The directress will show the children how to walk around someone who is working on the floor mat, by walking around their mat making sure not to disturb the child and his work.
How to interrupt someone who is working
The directress will show the children how to disturb either the directress or other children correctly by placing their hand on their shoulder waiting patiently for them to finish what they are busy with and attend to their needs.
How to observe without disturbing
The directress will show children how to wait patiently and not to talk while someone else is working.
Saying please and thank you
Children are taught to have manners, saying please and thank you.
How to greet someone
The directress will show children how to greet someone correctly with good manners.
How to stand in a queue
The directress will teach children to stand in a queue by getting the children to stand in a straight line.
How to answer a telephone
Children will learn how to greet someone politely when answering a telephone.
