Baric Tablets (presentation five)

How a three-period lesson is done with the Baric Tablets

This is done in a three-period lesson, where the directress tests three different weights: light, medium, and heavy.

Three-period lesson with the Montessori Baric Tablets

First period: the directress brings each tablet forward to the child one by one, she tells him the weight of each tablet, for example, “this is light, can you feel and say light” she repeats with the remaining two tablets. The directress isolates each tablet by placing it to one side.

Second period: the directress spends a great deal of time in this period. She asks the child to show her the specific weight she asks for.

Third period: the directress asks the child if he can tell her what each weight is called, pointing at each tablet as she does so. She isolates each tablet by placing it to one side.

The directress consolidates the lesson by encouraging the child to name each tablet individually by pointing to each one.
