Sensitising the fingers

In Montessori, children will often be asked if they want to sensitize their fingers when working with certain Montessori materials that involve texture, in order for their hands to be clean and to experience the sensations more effectively.

What happens in the Montessori Sensitizing the fingers exercise?

The directress will ask the child if he would like to sensitize his fingers. If the child says no, then she will continue with the presentation; if the child says yes, then she will ask him to fetch the sensitizing tray and bring it to the floor mat.

The Sensitizing tray includes a jug, which the directress will ask the child to put some water in and a cloth. The directress will gently dip the child’s fingertips into the water and dry them off with the cloth.
