Verb game (group one presentation)

What materials are needed for the Verb game?

For this activity, the directress uses six-eight red cards with verbs printed on them, the three-dimensional verb symbol, and the two-dimensional verb symbol. All of these materials are kept in a wooden box in the Language area of a Montessori classroom.

How this activity is presented

The directress invites a group of children to sit around the mat with her, and gives each child a card with a phonetic verb printed on it, for example, sit, hop, wink, run, etc. The directress asks one child to read out the verb on their card and do the action it says, the other kids must guess what it is.

All of the children have a turn. The directress then tells the children that doing words are called verbs. If the children have grasped the concept, the directress introduces the symbol for the verb to the children which is a red circle. She reminds them of the other symbols that have been learnt previously.

The directress shows the 3-dimensional sphere to the children and lets them feel it. She then shows them the 2-dimensional symbol and tells them that this is also the symbol for the verb. Each child places their cards on the mat and places the verb symbol above it.

This is a great activity to increase the child’s vocabulary and to learn the function of the verb.

For presentation two, the directress repeats presentation one by using non-phonetic words, for example, sleep, crawl, draw, etc.

For presentation three, the directress repeats presentation one by using synonyms - words with similar meaning, for example, sleep- dose, nap, snooze, rest etc.
