The conjunction game (individual presentation)
What materials are needed for the conjunction game?
For The Conjunction Game, the directress needs pieces of paper, an elastic band, a black coloured marker, and a pink coloured marker, three pencils, and the grammar symbol box that lives in the Language area of a Montessori classroom.
How is the conjunction game presented?
The directress invites the child to sit on the floor mat with her. She starts by telling him that she is going to write down what she wants him to give her. She begins to write a phrase on a piece of paper, giving the colour or any other adjective to describe the type of pencil she wants him to give her, for example, ‘the blue pencil’.
The directress writes another two phrases on separate pieces of paper, describing what type of pencil she wants for example, ‘the short pencil’ and ‘the red pencil’. She then asks the child to pass her ‘the blue pencil’. The child follows her instruction and passes her the blue pencil. The directress then writes in pink pen on two separate pieces of paper ‘and’. After this, she places the two ‘ands’ in between each phrase, so it reads ‘the blue pencil and the red pencil and the short pencil’.
The child is encouraged to read the phrase, and give her all three pencils. She then places a rubber band around all three pencils. She asks the child to place the symbols above the cards on the mat and explains to him that ‘and’ is a conjunction and it joins words together.
The directress consolidates what was learnt, thanks him for working with her, and helps him pack away.
