Large pink picture word card
What is the Large pink picture word card?
The Large pink picture word card is an A4 size card with six pictures in two columns, there is a blank space next to each picture. The three-letter phonetic word cards are kept in a pouch on the back of the card.
How is this activity presented?
The directress begins the activity by introducing the large picture word card to the child as well as introducing each picture to him from left to right then, top to bottom. She then places the first word card in front of the child.
The child is encouraged to sound, blend, and read each word and match it to the right of the corresponding picture on the A4 card. The directress uses her finger as a guide to let the child know which letter to sound out. The child will is encouraged to repeat the sounding, blending, reading, and matching for all the six words in the same manner.
When the child has matched all of the word cards, he is encouraged to read the words back to the directress from left to right and top to bottom (the directress guides him). She then shows him how to pack the word cards back into the pouch and pack them away.
What the child learns from this activity
This activity promotes the child’s matching skills, it increases his vocabulary, it aids in crossing the midline, as well as this activity gives the child further practice with reading three-letter phonetic words.
The Montessori language learning process
There is a step by step process for all language materials in a Montessori classroom. The directress must first complete the pink reading materials (three-letter phonetic words), then the blue reading materials (four or more letter phonetic words), and finally she moves on to the green reading materials (phonograms e.g. ee, th, sh, ay, ie etc).
The directress presents the Large blue picture word card in the same manner as the Large pink picture word card. The difference is there are now four or more letter words instead of three.
