Noun game presentation (group presentation two)
What materials are needed for this activity?
For this activity, the directress needs the noun box. This box is kept on the shelf in the Language area of a Montessori classroom. The noun box contains six-eight black cards with nouns that are found in the classroom. The nouns are usually printed in white on the card.
How is this activity presented?
The directress invites a group of children to sit around the mat. She tells the children that they are going to play a game with nouns, and reminds the children that a noun is a naming word. She gives each child a noun card with a phonetic word printed on it. She then tells the children to read the card and to fetch the object that is printed on it, or to place it on an object in the classroom, for example, block, rod, bag, pen, mop, etc.
The directress reads the noun card with each child and sees which object he brought back to the floor mat. She repeats in the same manner with all of the children once they have brought their objects back to the mat.
The directress reinforces that a naming word is called a noun, and we can usually feel or hold nouns.
For presentation three, the directress repeats presentation two by using non-phonetic nouns, for example, door, window, chair, pencil, and table.
For presentation four, the directress repeats presentation two by using the names of the children in the class: proper nouns (she uses capital letters).
For presentation five, the directress repeats presentation two by asking the child to fetch things from nature, for example: twig, flower, grass, nest, etc.
For presentation six, the directress repeats presentation two by asking the child to fetch the Montessori puzzles, maps, flags, etc.
