Pink booklet
This Montessori activity teaches the child how to handle a book by turning the pages carefully ensuring there is no damage done to the book. The child also sounds, blends, and reads the three-letter phonetic words that are on each page of the booklet, (there are usually seven or more pages).
The directress begins the activity by introducing the book to the child and shows him how to turn each page carefully, making sure there is no damage done to the pages of the book. The child is encouraged to turn a few pages of the booklet. The directress then asks the child to sound, blend, and read each word in the booklet, turning the pages as practiced.
What does this activity teach the child?
This activity increases the child’s vocabulary, this is more abstract for the child as there are no pictures used to assist him, and this is a wonderful activity to teach the child to have respect for books and the correct way of handling them.
The Montessori language learning process
There is a step by step process for all language materials in a Montessori classroom. The directress must first complete the pink reading materials (three-letter phonetic words), then the blue reading materials (four or more letter phonetic words), and finally she moves on to the green reading materials (phonograms e.g. ee, th, sh, ay, ie etc).
The directress presents the Blue booklet in the same manner as the Pink booklet. The difference is there are now four or more letter words instead of three.
