Phonetic animal farm (individual presentation)

What materials are needed for the Phonetic animal farm?

For this activity, the directress uses a model of a farm. The model contains phonetic farm animals, seven article cards, seven noun cards, seven verb cards, and seven adjective cards.

How is the Phonetic animal farm presented?

The directress invites the child to work with her, and assists him in bringing the materials to the floor mat. They begin by replacing the farm animals and placing them randomly on the mat, briefly discussing each one. The directress then removes the noun cards and tells the child that they are going to read the noun cards and match them to their corresponding object on the mat.

The child follows her instruction and begins to sound out, blend and read each word printed on the noun card. He then places each card above the matching object on the mat, ensuring there is enough space for the rest of the sentence. The directress then removes the adjective cards and tells the child that they are going to match the adjective cards. She reminds him that an adjective is a describing word.

Sounding out, reading and blending sounds

The child is asked to sound out, blend, and read the cards like before. He then matches them to the respective noun on the mat, for example, ‘soft’; the child is encouraged to think of what he thinks is soft on the mat and to place it to the right of the noun, for example, ‘soft rabbit’.

The directress removes the verb cards and reminds the child that a verb is a doing word. She asks him to sound out, blend and read each verb card and then to match the verbs to the respective noun cards. For example, ‘hops’, the child is encouraged to think what he thinks hops on the mat and to place the verb card to the right of the noun card, e.g. soft rabbit hops.

The articles ‘a’ and ‘the’ in Montessori language

The directress removes the article cards from the box, and reminds him an article is ‘the’ and ‘a’. She explains to the child that ‘the’ refers to one, and ‘a’ refers to a group of something. The directress asks him to place the article cards in front of the adjective cards. The sentence should then read as follows: the soft rabbit hops.

The child is encouraged to read through all of the sentences. The directress then thanks him for working with her, and helps him pack away.
