Adjective game (presentation two: group adjective card game)
What materials are needed for this activity?
For this activity, the directress uses a box that contains six-eight dark blue cards. Each card has an adjective printed on them, the directress also needs the adjective symbol.
How is this activity presented?
The directress invites a group of children to sit around the mat with her. She tells them that they are going to play a game with adjectives, and reminds them that adjectives are describing words. She hands each of the children an adjective card with a phonetic word on it, for example, pink, red, big, etc…
She then asks the children to fetch an object in the environment which relates to their card. When the child brings back the object, the directress consolidates the lesson by asking him what he had to collect. The child should then read his card and say, “I had to collect something big.” The directress repeats in the same manner with all the children.
The directress reiterates that adjectives are words that describe things. If the children have grasped the concept, she can introduce the adjective symbol which is a dark blue triangle. She reminds them of the other symbols that was learnt. She then places one adjective symbol above each adjective card on the mat and consolidates what was learnt that day. She thanks the children for working with her and helps to pack away.
What skills do children acquire by doing this activity?
In this activity the children are introduced to the adjective symbol, this activity introduces new grammar to the child, it broadens their knowledge, as well as this activity, encourages the children to practice reading.
For presentation three, the directress repeats presentation two by using non-phonetic adjectives. For example: short, long, light, large, etc…
Presentation four is usually done with the older child by repeating presentation two, using the Geometric cabinet in order to describe the angles of the triangles eg, obtuse, scalene, isosceles, etc.
