The preposition game (individual presentation)
What materials does the directress need for the preposition game?
For the preposition game, the directress needs three pencils, pieces of paper, an elastic band, a pencil stand, a black and a green coloured marker, and the grammar symbol box. The grammar symbol box is kept on the shelf in the Language area.
How is the preposition game presented?
The directress invites the child to work with her, and to assist her in bringing the materials one by one to the floor mat. She begins by telling him that she is going to write down what she wants him to give her. She begins to write down phrases for the pencils with the word ‘and’ in between each one, like before in the conjunction game - ‘the red pencil and the blue pencil and the short pencil’
She writes down ‘the stand’ on another piece of paper. The child follows her instruction and gives her the stand. The directress then writes in green coloured marker ‘in’, and places the words together on the mat so it reads: ‘the red pencil and the blue pencil and the short pencil in the stand’. The child is encouraged to read the sentence and to place the pencils in the stand.
The child is then asked to place the correct symbols above the cards on the mat. The directress asks the child which word shows him that she wants the pencils to be put in the stand? and the child should say ‘in’.
She tells the child that ‘in’ is a preposition, and places the green crescent moon from the grammar symbol box above the word ‘in’ and tells him that the green crescent moon is the symbol for the preposition.
