The tree nature walk
The directress invites a group of children to go outside and look at different trees. The directress asks the children to notice the leaves on the trees. She makes them aware of the differences that appear when the seasons change. The children are encouraged to pick leaves that have fallen to the ground and observe them.
The directress tells the children to ask the tree if it is OK to pick some leaves from it if there are no leaves on the ground to observe. This helps the children show respect for nature. The children are free to lie under the tree and encouraged to notice different things from nature. The directress can show the children how to hold a piece of white paper underneath a branch, then shake the branch to see what types of insects fall onto the paper.
Putting things onto the Montessori nature table
The children can take some leaves back in to the classroom to put on the nature table. The directress can show children a few other interesting activities, such as placing a leaf underneath a piece of white paper, then taking a wax crayon to trace over the leaf. The directress tells the children to observe the stem, apex, veins, etc.
It is very important for children to be outside and explore their environment. Through play and observations, children learn and thrive. Children should be encouraged to respect nature and love thir environment.
