Seed dispersal

The directress begins the activity by telling the child the meaning of seed dispersal. She explains to him that all plants have seeds, and the seeds need to be scattered/dispersed before they can germinate. She then places the main heading (seed dispersal) at the top of the mat.

The directress tells the child that there are many different ways that seeds can be dispersed, while saying this, she places the first sub-heading down on the mat. The first sub-heading is ‘wind’, she briefly discusses it with the child, and explains to him that some seeds have little hairs on them. She continues telling the child that when the wind blows, it blows the hair’s from one seed to another.

The directress moves on, and discuss the next sub-heading (water) She tells him that some seeds flow into water, and get carried away to their new destination. She then moves on to the ‘animals’ sub-heading. She explains to the child that, sometimes animals eat fruits, and the seeds don’t get digested, so often it goes through to the animals droppings.

She continues telling him that these little seeds have little hairs on them which stick to the animals fur. The animal then brushes against a plant, and that is how it gets dispersed. The directress then places the ‘explosive/self dispersed’ sub heading down on the mat, and tells the child that some plants produce seeds in pods and explodes, showering seeds everywhere.

The directress then shows the child the different seed dispersal pictures. He is encouraged to place the pictures under the correct heading.
