The Leaf Cabinet (presentation two)

What materials are needed for the second presentation of The Leaf Cabinet?

For the second presentation of The Leaf Cabinet, the directress uses one drawer and the solid outline set of cards.

How is the second presentation of The Leaf Cabinet presented?

The directress begins the activity by showing the child how to carry the drawer with two hands carefully to the floor mat. She tells the child that they are going to be matching the insets to their corresponding cards. The directress places all the cards out around the side, top and bottom of the drawer.

She shows the child how to remove an inset carefully with her right hand and pincer grip. She spends some time trying to find its corresponding card, once she finds it she places the inset on the card, making sure it fits perfectly. The directress does the same with the next inset, pausing to try and find its matching card.

Once all of the insets have been matched correctly to their corresponding cards, she then replaces the insets into their respective sockets. The directress then invites the child to have a turn.

What does the child learn by matching the leaf insets to the solid outline cards?

This activity helps the development of the child’s pincer grip and matching skills, it requires the child to sustain a high level of concentration and patience, as well as this activity promotes his hand-eye co-ordination and fine motor co-ordination.

Once the solid outline cards have been presented and mastered by the child, the directress move on to the thick outline cards, and finally the thin outline cards. They are all presented in the same manner.

When these activities have been presented, the directress can move onto the loosely grouped leaf classified cards, then to more specifically grouped leaf classified cards, then the leaf puzzle and nomenclatures - showing the child the bigger picture, moving on to more finer details.

The second presentation of The Flower Cabinet is presented in the same manner as above.
