Continent Globe
What is the Continent Globe?
The Continent Globe is the same size as the Sandpaper Globe. This one differs as there is no sandpaper. The continents are all painted in different colours and the water is painted blue.
In a Montessori classroom, we use a specific Continents Globe to teach the child about the different continents. Each continent is a particular colour to encourage memory by association.
Each continent has a particular colour:
North America: Orange
South America: Pink
Europe: Red
Africa: Green
Asia: Yellow
Australasia/ Australia: Brown
Antarctica: White
How is the Continent Globe presented?
The directress invites the child to work with her and shows him how to carry the globe carefully to the table, with one hand supporting the base and the other hand supporting the globe. She explains to the child that our earth is made up of land and water, and the land on this globe is in different colours.
She tells the child that these different colours of land on the globe are called continents. She draws the child’s attention to the different colours on the globe. She then begins to feel all of the continents with her index and middle fingers, and points to their continent, and says “this is our continent”.
The directress may refer to each continent’s size and colour, she removes the globe from its stand to feel Antarctica. The directress then invites the child to feel each continent, and does a brief three-period lesson with him. She encourages the child to show her the ‘large continent’, the ‘small continent’, the ‘red continent’, ‘our continent’ and the ‘cold continent’. The directress stops at the second period, and thanks him for working with her.
