Sweeping
This activity is presented by the children first drawing a circle with a piece of chalk on the floor. Ask the child to scatter a few beans, grains of rice, small pebbles, etc, around the outside of the circle. The directress first sweeps all of the beans and stones inside the circle and then sweeps them into the dustpan.
Once the child has watched the sweeping activity being presented, then the child again scatters the beans and rice outside of the circle. This time, the child takes the brush and sweeps the beans and rice into the dustpan.
Children enjoy this activity and it teaches the child to clean up after themselves. Learning to sweep up in Montessori helps the child to learn responsibility and self-reliance.
