The Short Bead Stair
The Short Bead Stair: orientation exercise
This activity can be done in groups or individually. The directress asks the child to place the box on the table which contains bead bars that differ in length and colour, and to place the piece of felt on the table mat.
The directress picks up the single bead bar, she asks the child what colour it is and to count the number. The child is then asked to place the single bead bar on the felt. She then introduces the 2-bead bar and asks the child what colour it is and to count it like before. The child is then asked to place the 2-bead bar directly below the single bead bar.
The child continues in the same manner to build a stair from 1-9 until a pyramid is formed.
What does the child learn by doing this activity?
This activity promotes visual discrimination, it prepares the child for addition, subtraction, and multiplication, as well as the child notices that the succeeding bar is one more than the previous one.
