The Stamp Game: Dynamic multiplication (with change)
How is this activity presented?
This activity is very similar to static multiplication using the stamps. This differs as an exchange will need to be made, hence the word ‘dynamic’ The directress begins to read the operation on the card (2347 x 2)
The directress reminds the child that they need to take 2347 twice and reminds him how to form numbers with the stamps. The child begins with the units, placing the correct amount of units vertically to the right of the mat. He then places the correct amount of tens to the left of the units, followed by the hundreds and thousands.
The directress reminds the child that they need to take this number twice. He begins with the units, placing the correct amount of stamps below the initial amount. He does the same for the tens, hundreds, and thousands.
She then tells the child that they need to add the numbers together. The child brings the top unit stamps down to the others and begins counting them. Once he reaches 10, the directress reminds him that they can change the 10 units for a ten. The child then exchanges the 10 unit stamps for a ten stamp in the box. He places the 10 with the tens category and counts the remaining unit stamps. The directress shows the child where to record the answer in the unit column with the green marker.
The child is encouraged to add the tens, hundreds, and thousands in the same manner, exchanging if necessary and recording the answer in the correct column with the correct coloured marker. The directress tells the child that when you add two of the same numbers, you are also multiplying the number two times. She shows the child how to check his answers once the operation is complete.
