Counting through with the Large Number Cards

How is this activity presented to the child?

This activity is very similar to counting through with the Golden Beads. This one differs as the child counts through with the Large Number Cards. This activity is another example of how we move from concrete to abstract in Montessori, by first counting through with the Golden Beads and then counting through with the Large Number Cards.

The Directress usually assists the child in laying out the Large Number Cards from one to nine on the far right-hand side of the mat. Counting “one unit, two units, three units” until reaching nine units, and saying “one more unit would be the same as one ten”.

She then places the number ten card to the left of the unit cards. Counting “one ten, two tens, three tens” until reaching nine tens, saying “and one more ten would be the same as one hundred”

The directress continues in the same manner with the hundreds and thousands, until all cards are laid out correctly with units to the far-right hand side, then the tens to its left, the hundreds to its left, and the thousands on the left-hand side.
