Seguin Board B: bridging exercise
How this activity is presented
The directress teaches the child how to combine the quantities with the symbols from 10-90 by using the beads and Seguin Board B.
The directress begins by asking the child to fetch a floor mat and to unroll it vertically on the carpet. She shows him how to carry the work carefully with two hands and places the first board from Seguin Board B in the middle of the mat. She places the box containing the ten-bead bars to the top left-hand side of the mat.
She points to ten and asks the child what number it is, he should say ‘ten’. She then asks him to take a ten-bead bar and place it to the left of the board.
The directress then moves down the board and points to twenty and asks the child what number it is, once he says ‘twenty’ she asks him to make twenty with the ten-bead bars and to place them to the left of the board. She repeats in the same manner with thirty.
The directress then consolidates with the child what was learnt that day. If he has grasped the concept and would like to continue, he may do so from 40-90 and complete it in the same manner as before. If he has not grasped the concept, the directress makes a note and tries again another day.
What does the child learn by doing this activity?
The child learns how to connect quantity, name, and symbol from 10-90, it prepares him for operations that will be done later on, reinforcement of place value in two-digit numbers as well as this activity helps the child’s sequence tens from 10-90.
