Fractions (presentation one)
What do the Montessori Fractions look like?
The Montessori Fractions are fascinating pieces of material in a Montessori classroom. They are 10 metal insets that are circular in shape - the first inset is a complete circle. The other insets are divided into halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, sevenths, eights, ninths, and tenths. There are control charts that come with the insets.
How is the first presentation done with the Montessori Fractions?
The directress brings the fractions tray with the corresponding control chart to the table. She introduces the fractions to the child and tells him that they are going to be matching the different fractions to the chart.
She shows him how to place each fraction on its respective outline on the chart and pack the insets back into the frames. The directress lets the child have a turn to match the insets with its corresponding outline on the chart and assists him in packing the work away.
