The Stamp Game: Static subtraction (without change)
How is static subtraction done with the Stamp Game?
In this activity, the child learns how to subtract the subtrahend (bottom number) from the minuend (top number), using the stamps. The directress introduces the expanded notation card to the child and reminds him about the (-) sign. She reads the operation to the child (7458 - 2312) and reminds him how to form a number with the stamps.
The directress tells the child they will only need to build the minuend(top number) with the stamps. She takes out the corresponding unit stamps and places them vertically to the right of the mat. The tens are then set out to the left of the units, followed by the hundreds and thousands.
She shows the child how to take the quantity of the subtrahend away from the stamps, and replacing them in the box. The directress starts with the units, followed by the tens, hundreds, and thousands.
The answer is the remaining stamps on the mat. The directress shows the child how to record the answer in the correct column with the correct coloured marker.
