Seguin Board B: association from 11-99

How is this activity presented?

This activity teaches the child to associate symbols and quantities from 11 -99, the directress uses Seguin Board B and the beads to teach the child this. The directress begins by asking him to unroll a floor mat vertically on the carpet, and to bring the materials one by one to the floor mat. She assists the child in laying both boards down one below the other and the box of golden beads to the top left-hand side of the mat. She unpacks the unit beads in to the bowel and lays out the number boards randomly on the right-hand side of the mat.

The directress points to number ten and asks what number it is, she then tells him that after ten comes 11. She asks the child to make 11 with the beads and place them to the left of the board. She then asks him if remembers how to make 11 with the number boards, she encourages the child to find the number one board and slot it on top of the zero.

She then tells the child that after 11 comes 12, she reminds him how to make 12 with the beads by adding one unit bead to 11. She shows him how to make 12 with the number boards by removing the number one board, turning it over, and placing it to the right of 20, she places the number two board where the number one board was and lets the child continue.

The child continues in the same manner with the assistance of the directress until reaching 19, first by making the number with the beads and then the boards. There should be a pile next to number 20. The directress tells the child 'β€œand one more makes 20” The child then replaces the beads back into the bowel and places one ten-bead bar along with the first ten-bead bar to the left of 20 on the board.

The directress turns the pile over to the correct way and tells the child that after 20 comes 21. She then shows the child how to make 21 with the beads and the number boards, she lets the child continue until he does not want to do anymore.

This activity is exceptionally long and therefore it takes a while to complete it so it is done over a period of time. The directress always carries on where it was left off.
